THE Police in Mpigi district have arrested 21 people suspected to have hacked three men to death.

District Police chief Evans Nuwamanya said the men were transporting cattle belonging to Gen. David Tinyefuza.

He identified the deceased as Sulaiman Kakooza, Richard Mwanje and Lawrensio Bawalagana.

Isma Katongole and Festo Busuulwa sustained serious burns. Their Fuso truck, which was loaded with cattle, was also set ablaze at 4:30am in Butambala on Tuesday.

It all started when a resident of Kikunyu village, Abdul Mbogga, discovered that his cow was missing. He alerted Haruna Mutebi, a village public announcer and also reported the case to Kabasanda Police post.

Mutebi is said to have urged residents to arm themselves with spears and machetes to ward off a group of cattle thieves that had invaded their village.

The villagers put barricades in the road and intercepted the truck. Before setting it ablaze, they shattered the windscreen and vandalised the gear box, fuel tank and battery.

The cattle scattered but the Police recovered 24 of them the following day.
The Kalamba sub-county chairman, James Ssenkumba, said cases of people stealing cattle had increased in the area.
