UGANDANS in the Diaspora will soon get dual citizenship and permanent residential status back home, internal affairs minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, has said.

The minister, who was last week speaking during a gala organised by NRM members in the US in Maryland State, said dual citizenship was contained in a bill due for debate in Parliament.

“The dual citizenship and permanent resident status are meant to re-establish full citizenship of Ugandans living abroad and facilitate their entry and exit from the country by removing immigration barriers,” Rugunda told the gathering of more than 200 Ugandans and their friends.

“Foreign nationals who acquire Ugandan citizenship will also enjoy the permanent resident status.”

NRM members in North America led by Abbey Walusimbi, presented a memorandum, asking the Government to facilitate private investments at home by Ugandans abroad.

Rugunda’s team comprised local government minister Kahinda Otafiire, international relations state minister Henry Okello Oryem, youth state minister James Kinobe, Uganda Investment Authority executive director Dr Maggie Kigozi and NRM deputy spokesman Ofwono-Opondo.

The team went to explain the stalled talks with the LRA, status of the displaced people in the north, internal politics since the last elections, the Land Amendment Bill, investment opportunities in Uganda and East Africa and relations with neighbouring countries.

The US-based Ugandans supported the Land Bill, which seeks to protect lawful tenants from illegal evictions but called for more sensitisation.
