BODY-builder of the year Ivan Byekwaso ‘cobra’ retained the Mr. Kampala body building title at Sharing hall, Nsambya on Sunday.

Byekwaso, 26, competing in the middle-weight category, had to contend with light-middle’s John Bosco Ssebabi’s stiff challenge before winning. Byekwaso of Nakivubo Power house outshone everyone in the individual poses.

He shook his entire back muscles to Awilo Longomba’s song Coupe Bibamba, sending the fairly large crowd into a frenzy.

En-route to the final, he had brushed off David Ochira, Robert Yiga and Ben Lukwago in the middle weight category and also beat the other eight finalists.

‘‘Experience matters, but it’s also unbelievable because I have been down with malaria for the last two weeks,” Byekwaso said after he was declared winner. He plans to add on more weight to challenge for the Mr. Uganda title due in August.

Other winners included Nakivubo’s Yusuf Zziwa (flyweight), Joseph Sseruga (bantam), Hotel Africana’s Umar Bulega (light weight) and Iron King’s Ali Katamba (welter).

Others were John Bosco Ssebabi (light-middle), Bob Kizza (light-heavy), Body Essence’s Fred Munyagwa (heavy) and Ibra Ssebatta (super heavy).

The championship, the first event on the Uganda Body Building and Fitness Association calendar, attracted 80 participants from Kampala, Mbarara and Entebbe gyms.

Samona products, the sponsors’ marketing manager, Lazarus Ssemukuye presided over the championship which was also supported by Nsibambi Enterprises and musician Michael Ross.
