Secretaries approved
BUSIA-The district council has approved the new secretaries for the finance and and education departments. They are Hassan Opio and Anna Mary Nabwire. Last month, the council censured the health secretary, Sande Luande, and that of education, Patrick Orandi. In a related development, the LC5 chairman, Patrick Were Wedakule, has reshuffled his executive. He sacked Helen Oguttu, who was the secretary for gender and community-based services. Wedakule replaced Oguttu, Charles Malowa Kudede is works secretary, while Christen Echumu is now the secretary production and marketing. The council approved the new changes.

Defilement worries minister
MBALE-The Minister for Presidency, Beatrice Wabudeya, has decried the rampant cases of defilement. Opening a workshop for paralegals from Mbale district at Mt Elgon Hotel last week, the minister said despite stringent laws to curb the crime, defilement was on the increase. “People should turn to God for guidance,” she said. Wabudeya blamed the high rate of defilement cases in the district on men who overdrink. She noted that many people were ignorant about laws and were too poor to seek legal services.

Three sent to High Court
TORORO-A UPDF soldier, Gaitano Musinguzi, and two women, have been committed to the High Court over the murder of a 35-year-old man. Musinguzi, Nosiata Nyakecho and Halima Achengo are said to have caused the death of Daniel Owori on January 31 at Agururu. Prosecution alleged that Owori used to sell potent gin from a grass-thatched house and the suspects were his customers. On the fateful day, the three were at the pub and moments later when their colleagues had left, the hut caught fire and Owori died.

Fish farmers get sh13m
SOROTI-Six fish farming groups have received sh13m from the African Development Bank. The production coordinator, Dr. Joel Francis Okalany, said the boost was aimed at promoting fish farming.
