Mukajjanga was only doing his duty

I have read the lead story of the New Vision of June 4 that the family of Mukajjanga, the chief executioner of the Uganda Martyrs apologised to the Church of Uganda, quoting Bishop Balagadde Ssekkadde of Namirembe Diocese.

I have read the lead story of the New Vision of June 4 that the family of Mukajjanga, the chief executioner of the Uganda Martyrs apologised to the Church of Uganda, quoting Bishop Balagadde Ssekkadde of Namirembe Diocese.

The apology was uncalled for because, by executing the martyrs, Mukajjanga was only carrying out his duties at the Kabaka’s service.

He didn’t do it with malice aforethought. The Kabaka was the supreme authority in the land as well as the supreme judge. He passed judgment and handed down a death sentence on the accused, who had disobeyed him.

The trial wasn’t fair and the sentence was brutal but that was the order of the day. It is exactly like today if the Supreme Court confirmed a death sentence against a convicted prisoner and, the President signs the prisoner’s death warrant.

The hangman at Luzira carries out the execution. That hangman isn’t obliged to apologise for doing so though he may regret it. Therefore, Mukajjanga committed no crime. And, even if he had done, his descendants can’t be held liable for his crimes.

Mukajjanga’s victims included Protestants, Catholics and Muslims. why did they apologise only to the Church of Uganda? by the Church of Uganda claiming that they accepted the apology of the family and forgave them, they are calling upon Kabaka Mutebi, whose great-grandfather ordered the execution to apologise.
