Students of Lakeside College Luzira hae received the New Vision Jazz PEace supplement with excitement.

While debabting on the motion lack of parental guidance at home is the cause of strikes in schools recently, the student swere full of praises for Vision’s innovations.

Painento Waiswa, a Senior Six student and president writers club said: “The New Vision is sensitising us on how to resolve conflicts. This shows that The New Vision cares for society.”

Waiswa adds that the project will not only give them mediation skills, but will also keep the students abreast with the news.

He says the project has helped to revive school clubs like debate, writers, music dance and drama. Through the clubs students are gaining communication and negotiation skills as major weapons for resolving conflicts.

For Anne Ruyonga a Senior One student, the project is an eye opener, “Conflicts are part of us. All we have to do is identify the cause and apply various skills to eliminate them.

Joshua Ssentamu a Senior Three student says, “The project will strengthen relationships in schools because most of the conflicts in schools are caused by poor relationships between students and teachers.

The debate was one of the peace activities that reflect the strikes affecting schools.

During the debate, the students from the proposing side argued that employed parents were especially neglecting their parental role. This negelect was cited as a major cause of indiscipline among children.

Besides enabling students acquire conflict solving skills, the project has been embraced with a lot of excitement.

Mr Jimmy Nyende, the headteacher, called upon students to participate in the project, “You need to take the project seriously because it is helping you learn to cope with conflicts like living with difficult people at school.”
