PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has called upon the public to support the Government in promoting education.

The President said the Government had initiated universal primary and secondary education to eliminate illiteracy, as the most strategic way of developing the country.

Museveni made the call in a speech read by works minister John Nasasira at the commissioning of the centre for culture and performances at Ntare School on Saturday.

The sh900m centre, which can seat 1,500 people, was built to mark 50 years of the school’s existence. It will host school assemblies and an entertainment centre for students. It will also be hired out for public functions to generate income.

In his speech, Museveni said it was compulsory for every child to attain primary education.

“I have heard that some parents do not want to take their children to school for fear that the personal identification numbers given to them are ‘demonic.’ I appeal to all of you to come together and fight such ignorance,” he said.

Recently, over 100 parents were arrested in Kakiika sub-county, Mbarara district for refusing to take their children to school, arguing that their religion forbid identification numbers, which are used to track the enrolment of students.

On the rampant fires in schools, the President said the public had to be involved in fighting the outbreaks and parents had to instill discipline in their children right from home.

He said students ought to realise that their rights come with responsibilities and must learn to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence.

He said sh3.5b had been given to the Directorate of Education Standards for inspection, licensing, security and safety measures in schools. Museveni and Rwandan President Paul Kagame are old boys of the school.

In a speech delivered by Rwandan ambassador Kamali Karegesa, Kagame pledged to continue supporting the school.

Education minister Namirembe Bitamazire and old boys from Rwanda attended the function.
