Orphans get bicycles

A total of 30 orphaned youths of Buwaiswa Technical Institute have received bicycles to enable them to make the 20km journey to the institute.

A total of 30 orphaned youths of Buwaiswa Technical Institute have received bicycles to enable them to make the 20km journey to the institute.
The youths, most of them living with their grandparents, are being trained in tailoring, carpentry and computing.
The bicycles were donated by the Stephen Lewis Foundation of Canada, through the Organisation for Good Life of the Marginalised, a Jinja-based humanitarian organisation.
The Foundation also pays the orphans’ fees, medical bills and provides clothing and meals. It also supports over 220 grandparents looking after orphans.
The bicycles were handed over by Anthea Hammons, a volunteer with the organisation, on Wednesday.
The executive director, Barbara Munyaruguru, commended the orphans for taking up vocational courses.
She said most youths had resorted to smoking and drug use, playing cards and early marriage instead of engaging in income-generating activities.
She appealed to well-wishers to emulate the foundation and rescue needy children.
