UGANDA Clays is to rehabilitate the areas from where it excavates clay to ensure environmental sustainability, John Senfuma, the board chairman said last week, reports Mikaili Sseppuya.
“We consider the environmental issues in the places where we excavate our clay.
“In fact, we have called for tenders under a programme aimed at improving and rehabilitating these areas.
“Some countries have turned such areas into forests and even put in animals which visitors pay to see,†he said.
Senfuma, however, pointed out that it was important for the numerous sand excavations companies and individuals to follow their example since excavation activities affect the Lake Victoria filteration process.
Senfuma was responding to a concern raised by a shareholder who wanted to know what the company was doing about the huge holes left behind after excavation of clay.
This was at the company’s annual general meeting at Hotel Africana, Kampala.
The firm uses clay dug up from several places as the raw material for its burnt building products like tiles and bricks.
The concerned shareholder said that untended excavations elsewhere especially around L.Victoria have caused environmental degradation and affected the water filteration process around the lake.

The shareholders resolved to retain the directors until after the new factory at Kamonkoli is launched in appreciation of the role in the company’s appreciating value.
Environmental considerations around the lake came to the fore after the national water supplier, National Water and Sewerage Corporation increased its tariffs because of reduced filtration of water by Nakivubo swamp which increased purification costs due to increased silting in the lake.
