A mundane Monday public holiday and chilly weather conspired to muffle what was slated to be the highlight of many happy scholars.

For, after hard-earned scholarships to some of UK’s top universities nothing could stand in the way of these Chavening and Commonwealth scholars to celebrate their success.

So on that treacherous Monday evening last week, at the British High Commissioner’s residence in Nakasero 27 departing and over 10 returned scholars got down to a merry cocktail hosted by Martin Shearman, the new High Commissioner and the British Council.

It was a lovely evening marked by exchange of pleasantries and good advice to the departing scholars from their returned counterparts.

“Take your studies seriously and always seek to publish your work,” counselled Dr. Byarugaba, a departing scholar and researcher. Olivia Nalubwama could not hide her excitement as she eloquently took the guests through her journey to the top.

She is one of few Chavening departing scholars. Shearman congratulated the scholars and advised them to make the best of their time in the UK. And to sumptuous drink and food each one toasted to sweet success.

The Chavening and Commonwealth are some of the scholarship schemes through which the British Government sponsors Ugandan students to undertake postgraduate studies.

They are offered annually and cover various disciplines.
