Local government minister Kahinda Otafiire has agreed to give three acres of prime land at Naguru Housing Estate to a private firm for the temporary creation of a car depot.

The division council had earlier rejected the proposal. In a letter to Nakawa Division chairperson, Protazio Kintu, Otafiire said the land would be occupied temporarily by Dubai Terminal, a private firm, pending commencement of the estate’s development.

“This is to permit Dubai Terminal to use the said piece of land temporarily until the re-development of the estates commences,” the letter said.

Otafiire’s communication followed inquiries by division leaders into the decision to offer Plots 12-80 on Naguru Road to an investor.

The Naguru-Nakawa Estate was meant to be redeveloped by two firms, Comer Homes Group and OPEC Prime Properties. However, the project was halted after the Inspector General of Government ordered investigations into reports that the sale of the land was fraudulent.

Dubai Terminal was originally operating at premises behind Uganda Manufacturer’s Association showground at Nakawa.

The minister’s approval comes as the land has already been levelled and fenced-off with barbed-wire and concrete bricks.
