Before the November 4 elections in the US, my lecturer joked that if Obama won, it would make our Kenyan classmates feel a “little presidential.” It turned out to be a correct prophesy. After the elections, a Kenyan friend wrote on her book that she would be traveling to Kisumu, “the home of the new White House.” I told her that truckloads of Sadolin paint would be arriving in Washington to paint the White House black. I am a great admirer of Obama, but I disagree with him on two issues:

Abortion
- Obama thinks that if a teenage girl cannot raise a baby they should not be punished with one.

I believe in the sanctity of human life. One wrong can never justify another. Our births may be accidents but we are not accidents. Imagine what a great orator the world would have missed if Obama’s mother had chosen to abort her Kenyan son?

Homosexuality
- In his congratulatory speech in Chicago, he promised to keep every American united. “Whether gay or straight,” he remarked. I do not agree with the President-elect on this one. Homosexuality breaks the natural law.

Nevertheless, he moves me on several fronts.

Charisma
- He has a great personality and he is a great speaker. As a friend put it, “he would make an excellent evangelist.”

Family man
- Obama’s love for his family inspires me. He is a good husband and a loving father. He once told christianitytoday.com that he “believed in the redemptive power of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.” I pray that his administration reflects exactly that. God remains the holder of the most important job. In God’s Kingdom we are equals. The God who pumps blood into Obama’s veins also pumps it into ours.

The God who lubricates Obama’s eyes is the same God who oils ours to read and understand. The world is waiting for you (Obama) to follow God and in turn cause the real change we can believe in.
