Acwa bridge is a death trap to passengers travelling to or from Gulu

IT beats my understanding that for the last 22 years or so, neither the Gulu nor the Kitgum (or whichever district has the jurisdiction) administration has never stopped to think of reconstructing the Acwa bridge!

This bridge that connects both districts is a death trap for its users. Without boundaries, this concrete brick bridge has a width that is almost the same width of the buses that cross it.

Once in a bus and with a shiver running down your spine, you can easily think you are about to be plunged into the river!

The last time I travelled from Kitgum on November 9 we came across a truck with merchandise that had fallen into the river and we left rescuers still struggling to pull it out.

The most sickening thing is that in a small town village before this bridge, we came across a woman who was in labour as the nearest health centre did not have any medical personnel to attend to her. Unfortunately since our taxi was full beyond traffic laws, we could not accommodate her.

My concern is that such people, more often than not, board trucks like the one which had fallen into the river.

If this woman had been on this particular truck, she and her unborn baby would be no more! My appeal to the Gulu L5 chairman, Norbert Mao, given the pace at which Gulu is developing, if his predecessors and juniors did not or do not think of this as a matter of urgency, he should please personally take it up and widen this bridge.

I don’t think that after 22 years or so we should wait for donors to save our properties and lives. The matter is urgent!
