FORMER housing minister Capt. Francis Babu has warned the NRM government of possible defeat in the 2011 general elections if it does not offer the necessary change Ugandans want.

“This country badly needs a real change. Our leaders are not leading by example. Uganda deserves to be better than what it is. If the current leadership fails to change things, God will give us an Obama who will take leadership to offer a change that Ugandans are craving for,” Babu said with a gaze fixed on ethics minister James Nsaba Buturo.

He made the remarks on Sunday while speaking at the launch of Bishop David Kiganda’s new book titled “Tough Times, Tougher People” at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel.

Babu, also a member of the NRM, said if a herdsman stops taking the cows for grazing and drinking water, the best solution is to get another one to do the work.

Babu also expressed dismay over the Parliament’s failure to censure ministers Amama Mbabazi (security) and Dr. Ezra Suruma (finance) over the NSSF land scandal.

He said times have changed and that the selfish leaders who ignore the wishes and interests of the people would be phased out.

“A good leader is a servant of the people not a master. If people want federalism, you give it to them. You have to do as people wish, not as you wish,” Babu said.

Buturo, who was the guest of honour, also warned public officials who swindle public resources that God would deal with them.

“We have many leaders who do not deserve to be leaders of our nation. Some take pride in witchcraft, some steal public funds, others support evils like prostitution and homosexuality,” Buturo said.

Kiganda, the Kampala overseer of the National Fellowship of Born Again Pentecostal Churches, urged the Government to ensure that the country’s education sector produces job creators and not seekers.
