NATIONAL cricket coach Francis Otieno is confident that the national women cricket team will put up an enviable performance in the East Africa Women Cricket Cup.

Otieno will be in charge of the team that departs today for the one-week event, due to start Wednesday in Nairobi.

He believes that the competi¬tive season has added more to the players who are ready to defend the silver¬ware they won last year in Kenya.

“By the time we won the trophy last year, we had had so little competition. This year, we have had the school’s cricket week, the women league and also some international match¬es and the girls are more focused,” said Otieno after the last training session yesterday.

He said that the league has added a lot of element in women cricket. “Cricket is all about play¬ing the game and having constant practice. The girls have been able to improve and I am looking forward for another good outing,” he said of the preparations for the encounters that will also have hosts Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda in the Africa Cricket Association organ¬ised tournament.

Action starts Sunday with Uganda taking on Rwanda. The team: C. Aryemo, B. Mukankusi, M. Nandelenga, M. Ayato, F. Najjumba, R. Akwenyo, A. Kisakye, G. Adugu, C. Aweko, S. Akello, J. Nsubika, M. Kunihira and S. Atim.
