More blood is needed
NATIONAL -Nakasero Blood bank needs more blood, the blood service coordinator, Lorenzo Kaggwa, said. “We collected 144,800 units of blood in 2006, which was 78% of the annual target of 186,000. The demand is still high,†he said. He said donations must be ongoing because blood is a living tissue which can die within 38 days. Kaggwa said blood donation is still a challenge in Africa. The bank is currently involving corporate companies in a blood donation drive programme. They appeal to the public to donate generously.
Youth in HIV awareness drive
KAMPALA -Youth in the Anglican Church are to work with local communities to fight the resurgence HIV/AIDS, the Anglican Flames Ministry has said. Tom Duku, the advisor of the ministry, said the youths are equipped with information dissemination tools needed to combat HIV/AIDS. Duku was speaking to journalists at the pre-launch of the 20-year celebrations of the ministry due in February. He said the ministry would reach out and teach the public about the strength of worship. It will also create a prayer base in all dioceses within the country.
Two netted over drug theft
SIRONKO -Two medical workers attached to Busasa health centre IV were recently arrested for allegedly selling drugs. Terusa Masaba, a nurse and Steven Namagoye, a cleaner, were picked by the police after Namagoye was nabbed with a tin of amoxyl capsules. The district police commander, Richard Mvule, said scouts had been deployed to monitor the health unit after receiving complaints that drugs delivered often ended up in private clinics and drug dealers.
Mosquito nets for heart patients
MULAGO -United Assurance Staff have donated mosquito nets and blankets worth sh1.5m to the Uganda Heart Institute through their Charity fund. The United Assurance General Manager, Isaac Gunda, handed over the items to the institute recently. Gunda said they wanted to protect heart patients from malaria.
