THIS year’s Uganda Golf Union (UGU) activities will start with the Western Open in March. Fort Portal’s Toro club is venue for the event to set in a season with action all year round.

Twenty events are lined up through to December when the national champion will be declared.

The new calendar has more action than last year’s schedule that had 13 events.

Stephen Birungi emerged winner of the championship introduced in 2005, to get a true picture of domestic golf’s best players.

Birungi took over from Stephen Kasaija, winner of the inaugural edition, but who later joined the professional ranks.

Prior to the launching of the national championship, the winner of the Uganda Open was considered the best golfer.

New national champion Birungi had made a name by winning the Uganda Open from 1997 to 1999.

After the Western Open due March 3-4, attention will turn to the Mbarara Open set for March 17-18.

The calendar has new events including the Sadi Memorial Open due on the Entebbe course, and the Eastern Open to be played in Jinja.
