The abolition of graduated tax left my districts crippled. Mayor Stephen Kabuye has asked the Government to give more funds to local authorities, saying the compensation tax is little for districts to implement their programmes. “Entebbe municipality would get 80% of it’s budget from graduated tax, but the Government sends a compensation tax of about 30%.” Kabuye was addressing councillors and municipality residents at the municipal offices.

Peace meeting for next week

A national consultative conference aimed at fostering peace and national reconciliation is to be held between February 12 and 14. Dr. Alex nkabahona, the coordinator the masters programme in peace and conflict studies at Makerere University, said the conference will attract leading academia, opposition politicians, government officials and MPs. It is organised by a coalition of organisations and institutions working towards sustainable reconciliation in Uganda.

A resident of Mutungo-Bbiina zone A may find it hard to defend herself against murder charges. Fatuma Mutonyi reportedly stabbed Abubaker on Saturday. In a statement at Jinja Road Police station, Mutonyi said the act was in self defence. Abubaker had accused her of taking his money and denying him sex.
