THE Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has decided that at least 40% of all its leadership positions shall be occupied by women.

“We agree that women’s interest in leadership would be enhanced when they see role models within the party,” said the leader of the party, Miria Kalule Obote, during a press conference to mark the International Women’s Day, on Wednesday.

Miria Obote praised the UPC for building many girls’ schools and expanding others like Wanyange, Nabisunsa, Bweranyangi, Warr, St. Catherine and Tororo Girls.

The party ruled between 1962 to 1971 and 1980-85.

She stated that the UPC made it cheaper to educate girls.

“In order to increase intake of girls in schools, the UPC government reduced school fees for the girl child.”

Miria Obote also said the UPC appointed Mrs. Grace Wamala, as the first female minister.

She, however, accused the Government of refusing to invite her to yesterday’s national celebrations at Kololo, a claim that was disputed by the gender ministry spokesperson, Joan Murumu, who said Miria’s card had been sent to her.
