THE Japanese government has given a grant of $83,421 (sh145m) to assist former child soldiers to reintegrate into society.

The Japanese Ambassador to Uganda, Ryuzo Kikuchi, on Wednesday told the press that the money will be channelled through a local non-governmental organisation, Terra Renaissance, based in Gulu district.

“The project will construct two classrooms, purchase furniture, vocational training equipment and hold peace education seminars in order to improve the learning environment at the training centre.”

The director, Terra Renaissance, Shingo Ogawa, said child mothers would be helped to become self-reliant through providing them with basic vocational, business skills and microfinance credit.

He added that the centre currently supports about 100 child mothers. “After completion of the centre, we shall be enrolling at least 40 new students each year,” Ogawa confirmed.

The centre has supported child mothers since 2005.
