SPEED Merchant Emma Katto is thrilled that the KCB Safari Rally route this weekend is very fast. He says that it will suit his driving style.
“Oh! The roads are very smooth. It’s going to be a fast rally. We have good notes and better knowledge of the roads which we must take full advantage of,†Katto said after reccing early this week.
The Ugandan ace said the route was the same one he drove on in the late nineties.
Katto outpaced several world class drivers to finish a praiseworthy seventh in 1997 when the Safari rally was still a WRC event, and considered the toughest championship.
Katto and compatriot Karim Hirji were prominent privateers in the Safari.
The Safari is now an Africa Rally Championship event after losing its world championship status in 2003. The three-day event started last evening with a super special stage at Uhuru Park in Nairobi.
In the world championship, Sebastien Loeb needs a repetition of last year’s victory in Mexico this weekend to prevent Ford’s Marcus Gronholm from pulling away in the drivers’ championship.
Citroen’s triple champion is six points behind the Finn after three rounds.
Mexico will be the first rally of the season on gravel, the most common surface in the 16-round championship, and the high-altitude stages will be more indicative of teams’ form.
