PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni took his entire Cabinet on a farming tour to Masaka yesterday. The Prime Minister and over 20 ministers were lectured on farming by Josephine Kizza at her St. Jude Busense Family Integrated Project in Busense, Bukoto Central.

The farm, covering 3.7 acres, brings in sh50m per month from livestock, growing vegetables and processing fruits for the local market and for export to Europe.

The President, dressed in army fatigues, and the ministers were first briefed on the farming operations in a tent under some mango trees.

Kizza explained that all farm activities were integrated: some of the crops were used to feed the animals, while the animal waste served as fertilizers for the crops.
She also said she generated biogas, which she uses for domestic cooking. The farm has over 50 workers.

The farm, which received input from European experts and the UN Industrial Organisation, processes pineapples, jackfruits, mangoes, yellow bananas and other fruits.

The woman farmer contended that she wanted to improve the quality of her products so as to be competitive on the international market. After the briefing, the group toured the farm’s processing plant.

Museveni applauded the host, calling her “Muzuukusa” (one who awakens). He pledged support to the farm in the form of machinery to improve on the packaging.

Internal affairs minister Ruhakana Rugunda said he was impressed by what he saw while Prime Minister Nsibambi vowed he would visit the farm again with his wife.

The Cabinet had lunch at Masaka town’s State Lodge. Museveni later addressed a public rally in the town, where he passed out the sub-county chiefs who had been undergoing training at Kyankwanzi Leadership School as part of the preparation for the Bonna Bagaggawale (Prosperity for All) scheme.
