An arms expert has suggested that the Church be involved in the disarmament exercise if it is to succeed.

Richard Mugisha of Uganda Action Network on Small Arms, Friday noted that the Church commands respect and confidence of the people, and if involved, it could compel owners of illegal arms to surrender them peacefully.

He also attributed the continuing penetration of illegal arms into Uganda to lack of comprehensive laws.

Mugisha said people get guns illegally because they are ignorant of the rightful means.

He advocated that the Government sensitises the public on proper acquisition of guns for security purposes.

He noted laws were being drafted to check gun ownership and misuse.
