Joseph Rainer had a great heart!

SIR — If there is any pain the year 2007 will ever inflict on Uganda in general and eastern Uganda in particular, it is the death of Joseph Rainer.

SIR — If there is any pain the year 2007 will ever inflict on Uganda in general and eastern Uganda in particular, it is the death of Joseph Rainer.

At the time he came to Uganda, he thought he would do some humanitarian work among the orphaned children of eastern Uganda and beyond. However, when he toured the areas and made critical examination of the living conditions of the entire population of the places he had targetted, he widened his horizons to cover all the children regardless of whether they were orphans or not.

I personally benefited from his programmes! As Director of Christian Children’s Fund in the 1980s, he embarked on a serious programme, to solicit help from individuals of goodwill to sponsor the children under his care. He built many primary and secondary schools and dispensaries.

His efforts made the implementation in the latter years of the Universal Primary Education (UPE) easy in many parts of the region.

He paid fees, catered for domestic requirements such as blankets, basins and plates and when starvation became a threat, he supplied foodstuffs.

Currently, there are many students at Makerere, Uganda Christian University Mukono and elsewhere who have been depending on him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
