Lapolo is unfit to be an RDC!

SIR — I was an incurable optimist who harboured the illusion that the new Pader RDC Santo Okot Lapolo would usher in a new era of peace, love and understanding. This has been shattered by his beastly and demeaning behaviour towards Lonzino Odora, a teacher at Patongo-Akwee P.S.

Many of our leaders behave like lapolo because they have brains devoid of common sense.

This is why they publicly manifest poor leadership and administrative skills. I would like to inform the ignorant RDC that school inspections extend government control over what is taught in schools to how it is taught and implemented. In particular, school inspectors assess the extent to which teachers are following the National Education Strategy.

They report in detail on the particular teaching methods used in different schools and are more knowledgeable in handling matters like taking corrective actions on erring teachers.

What does the RDC’s action do for the morale of dedicated teachers who practise their careers in tough schools with difficult classes? After all that investment of time, emotional and intellectual energy they are branded ‘inadequate’ and caned in front of their pupils!

Does Lapolo think that any good teacher can think of teaching in such an area where teachers are humiliated in front of their pupils? Does he realise he assaulted a professional and demeaned his person, caused trauma and psychological pain of great magnitude. Does he realise that he undermined the morale of the teachers in the area he is supposed to control?
Is the RDC now going to teach in the place of the teacher he humiliated?

Instead of discussing with the professionals in thier field the RDC decided to insult and humiliate the poor man who has sacrificed a lot to teach in very hard and poor conditions with very little pay that can hardly meet his daily needs. Has the RDC ever tried to campaign for good working conditions for teachers in those schools he has been touring?

I appeal to the Teachers Union in Uganda to take on this RDC and bring him to book for his behaviour. Lapolo is not fit to be an RDC.The education minister must protest the RDC’s behaviour. Remember “there has never and will never be any system greater that its teachers”.
