PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has advised children benefiting from the free primary and secondary education schemes to carry their own meals to school.

Museveni reiterated that issues like accommodation and meals must not be mandatory to any student under the universal education programmes.

He stressed that it was not taboo for the children to carry food, adding that it was safe and cheap.

“I carry food. Here is my container and yet I am a President and a General,” he said, displaying his food-container.

Museveni, accompanied by his wife Janet, made the remarks on Wednesday while meeting Ntungamo district leaders in Ruhaama county, according to a State House statement released on Thursday.

He appealed to teachers and parents to support the free education programmes.
Museveni noted that the introduction of UPE and USE was meant to make education more affordable and to eradicate illiteracy.

He cited teachers’ salaries and infrastructure like laboratories, libraries, teachers’ houses and school stationery as the crucial educational requirements to be attended to.

The President observed that a belief by some people that they cannot break-away from poverty was a major hindrance to fighting it.

He advised leaders to focus on commercial production and assured the people of market for their produce.
Mrs. Museveni, who is the Ruhaama county MP, called upon district leaders to implement development programmes.
