UPDF Sgt. Okiror Charles shot dead three people, including his father-in-law, and injured three others after which he committed suicide.

The army spokesman in the north, Lt. Chris Magezi, told journalists in Gulu that the incident took place at Lacekocot IDP camp in Aruu county, Pader district on Sunday.

Okiror, based at Laguti military detachment, had gone to his in-laws to inquire about his wife.

According to Magezi, the father-in-law told him that the woman refused to go back to him because she preferred to marry a civilian.

“His father in-law, Austin Lajul, told him that his wife had got married to another man. Later in the night, Okiror went to drink with an LDU soldier who had a gun.

“He grabbed the gun which he went with to kill his father-in-law and two children before shooting himself,” Magezi said.
The children were identified as Pira Odoko, 7, and Nancy Atii, 5. Okiror also injured three other people who were with Lajul. They were rushed to Lacekocot health unit.

Magezi regretted the incident, saying it was unfortunate that a custodian of the law had acted criminally.

Late last year, another UPDF soldier shot dead five people including his father-in-law, wife and a child in Lacekocot camp.

He had also picked a quarrel with his wife. He went on the run and till now, the army has not arrested him.
