FOUR houses, whose construction plans were not approved by Mbarara Municipal Council, have been demolished. The engineer of the municipality, Gordon Twesiime, led a team of law enforcement officers who razed the houses in Mbarara town on Friday.

The exercise started in Kakoba Division in the morning and by midday, the affected residents were still stranded with their property after being left homeless.

Ronald Kazoora, one of the affected people, lamented: “I was shocked when I received a call from my wife that my house was demolished by municipal council officials. I did not expect it. It is very sad.”

Twesiime explained that some of the houses were built on road reserves, while others were in wetlands. “As I did my routine inspection, I discovered that these people did not have documents to show that the plans of their houses were approved by the council.”

He revealed that between 30% to 40% of the houses in the municipality were built illegally. Such houses would be razed this week.

The demolishers will first head for those in Nyamitanga and Kamukuzi divisions.
