SIR — I recently read
that head teachers in Jinja were demoted for failure to meet the target required by the ministry of Education.

To many this may be commendable and copied by other districts but to a professional like me it is amazing. The poor
head teachers’ cases were not forwarded to the District Service Commission and so they did not defend themselves.

They should be listened to. Secondly, what criteria did the district use to promote the deputies of the head teachers who were demoted? Deputies are part of the administration and they too sould share the head teachers’ fate. Did Jinja advertise the jobs?

The affected head teachers should appeal to the Public Service Commission or take the district authorities to court. Even if the decision was right, the procedure was wrong and illegal.
The national teachers Union should move fast and sort this thing out lest it spreads to other areas.
