KIZZA Besigye’s brother, Joseph Musasizi Kifeefe is critically ill. The PRA suspect was admitted to Mulago Hospital on April 30, with suspected lymphoma (cancer of the white blood cells) as a result of another illness.

“At the moment he is in hospital suffering from anaemia,” said the Minister of State for Internal Affairs, Matia Kasaija.

“He is under very careful treatment. His relatives are free to go and see him. In fact, Dr. Kizza Besigye was there to see him today. He will continue to receive adequate medical care.”

Kizza Besigye is President of the opposition party, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

Prison sources said Kifeefe had persistent fever, which the doctors were trying to treat with quinine and coartem.
They also said he had received blood transfusion and was due to get another. Kifeefe is being monitored by the director of prisons in charge of medical services.

Kifeefe and Besigye are facing treason charges together with other PRA suspects currently on remand in Luzira Upper Prison. Requests by The New Vision to visit the patient were turned down.

David Nsalasata, the senior assistant commissioner of prisons in charge of administration, said Kifeefe was being guarded and could only be accessed after clearance.

Kifeefe was last month transferred to Kampala from Nyamushekera Prison in Bushenyi, after he complained of stomach-related problems.

Since his transfer, he has failed to appear in court on two occasions, citing poor health.
