THE Government is to partner with Uganda Children’s Writers and Illustrators Association (UCWIA) to promote a reading culture among African children, the minister of Labour Gender and Social Development, Syda Bbumba, has said.

In a speech presented by William Otim, a commissioner in the gender ministry, Bbumba said: “I’m very satisfied with the activities which UCWIA carries out. The Government of Uganda is ready to be a willing partner in the pursuit of your goals.”

The speech was presented at a workshop on skills for writing and illustrating children’s books at Fairway Hotel recently.

UCWIA promotes a reading culture among children. The organisation’s chairperson, Eva Barongo, said the goals of the association are to help children appreciate books as a source of entertainment, information and study.

She observed that since UCWIA was established, it has published 20 children’s books, of which two won international awards last year.

The workshop was sponsored by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY).

The workshop’s facilitators included Prof. Austin Bukenya of Makerere University and Gacheche Wairuki, a publisher from Nairobi.

The participants resolved that UCWIA sets up national and community libraries at the village level and make it mandatory for training institutions to have story books for illustration, and form network associations for writers and illustrators of children’s books.
