HARRIET Naggayi, an eight-year-old girl, whose face was affected by Tuberculosis (TB) of the skin, is steadily healing. Following a story that highlighted her plight in The New Vision on May 2, 2007 Good Samaritans came up to assist in financing her medical bills.

Naggayi was then taken to Mulago Hospital, where she is still receiving TB treatment. Dr. Fred Kambugu, a dermatologist, is treating her.

She now has a large scar in place of a wound that covered half of her face a month ago.

Her mother, Mary Namwanje, a housewife and resident of Kawempe Lugoba zone, is happy. She says her daughter is on the second phase of TB treatment which includes a seven-day course of oral cloxacillin.

“Naggayi is healing steadily. She is happier and looks in the mirror almost all the time to tell me that the big wound is almost gone. She has begun making friends with kids in the neighbourhood and even brushes her teeth, something she could not do before,” says Namwanje.

What is left of her nose are two tiny peeping holes, which she pricks with a matchstick to prevent complete blockage.
She still breathes through her mouth.
Though her voice is considerably audible, her speech and pronunciation of words is poor.

“Her appetite has grown, but I think this is because of the medication,” says her mother.

“She is no longer withdrawn. In fact she is much more active than her brothers and sisters.”

Naggayi hopes to go back to school immediately to catch up with other students. She dropped out of school in 2004 after being promoted to Primary two. She wants to be a doctor after completing her studies.

Namwanje is grateful to all the Good Samaritans, who helped her daughter and the family.
