OVER 105 families of the Bahima herdsmen in Buliisa district will be shifted to another area outside the district to diffuse the ethnic tension in the area. The state minister for lands, Dr. Kasirivu Atwooki, said the Government would transfer the herdsmen within two weeks following the recent clashes which left several people injured.

The resolution was made during a meeting held yesterday at Buliisa district headquarters. During the meeting attended by the intelligence services coordinator, Gen. David Tinyefuza, an eight-man committee headed by Kasirivu was appointed to identify the land for resettlement.

The committee will ensure an orderly movement of the Bahima from Buliisa district.

Some of the committee members include the resident district commissioner, Hussein Matanda, Tinyefuza, the two area MPs Stephen Bitahwa and Beatrice Mpairwe, plus the district chairman, Fred Lukumu.

Kasirivu said: “These people were defrauded of millions of shillings by local council officials who sold them air. The officials had no powers to allocate land, therefore, the herdsmen have no legal right over the disputed piece of land.”

Matanda said the people who defrauded the herdsmen would be brought to book and they would refund the money.
Kasirivu and Tinyefuza spent two days intervening in the tribal conflicts between the Bahima and the Bagungu on the orders of President Yoweri Museveni.

The cattle keepers, with about 10,000 head of cattle, were grazing on a big chunk of unutilised land at Waiga and Bugana villages but the indigenous Bagungu said they wanted the land for cotton growing, sparking off a bitter conflict.
