THE Karimojong are to pay 80 head of cattle as compensation for each woman killed by rustlers in Pader district. Pader district chairman Peter Odok W’Oceng said the warriors would also have to offer 60 head of cattle as compensation for every man they kill during raids in the district.

Odok was speaking at the last funeral rites of the late Andrew Ocuka at Oliga Quarters in Patongo sub-county, Agago. Karimojong cattle rustlers killed Ocuka in Abim district recently as he was returning to Pader from a business trip in Kotido district.

Odok said compensation was discussed during a meeting between the district and Karimojong leaders and elders. He added that it was in line with the Karimojong culture.

He assured the residents of Agago county who have often been victims of the Karimojong atrocities, that the government has recruited more Anti-Stock Theft Unit guards to beef up UPDF efforts in protecting them, especially at the Pader-Kotido border.

In a related development, Pader resident district commissioner Lt. Santo Okot Lapolo said eight people, mainly from Agago, have been killed by the Karimojong cattle rustlers since the beginning of this year.

He disclosed that most of cattle raided and that some were recovered with the help of the Karimojong leaders and elders.
