BOBI Wine’s father, Jackson Sentamu, was among the many fans who braved the heavy rain as the self-proclaimed ghetto president put up a show-stopping performance on Friday night.

This was at the launch of Wine’s latest album, Kiwaani at Hotel Africana. And the crowd was very cheerful and not even the night’s earthquake or rain could dampen their spirits.

The rain got heavier as the night wore on, but a surprising number of fans were determined to stick it out, eager for the chance to sing along with Wine.

And indeed, Wine never disappointed. Donning a white suit and a matching white cap, he strolled on stage to affectionate applause. He began with his earlier hits including Wendi and Ghetto, his gleaming voice spinning out expressive phrases. After the third song, Wine shuffled off, leaving the stage to a bunch of crooners.

And it seems like revellers in Kampala are slowly learning to appreciate hip-hop, if the ovation that greeted Rocky Giant is anything to go by. The crowd roared as he slid onto the stage belting out complicated rhymes while still sounding conversational.

Wine then returned for a four-song encore. He first sang renditions of some songs by the late musicians Paul Kafeero and Philly Bongoley Lutaaya.

He also brought guests on stage including Buchaman, Rosette Akandinda, Nubian Li, Chagga, Banjo Man, Buwa Man and Micky Wine. He did a couple of songs including the crowds’ favourites, Adamu ne Kaawa and Bada and crowned it all with Kiwaani.
