The Lyantonde district council has approved the proposal for the office of the chief administrative officer (CAO) to levy a marriage tax.

Couples will pay sh50,000 for marriage.

The council, chaired by the district speaker, Ephraim Kamugisha, unanimously endorsed the marriage fee as a strategy to broaden the district tax base.

The new administrative officer, Hezi Kafureka, said the people had embraced the idea of wedding in the CAO’s office because the process was more convenient.
He said those who want to wed for the second time would have to present genuine divorce certificates.

Kamugisha, who supported the idea, asked the chief administrative officer to publicly announce marriage banns three weeks in advance.
