She badly needs a child
Dear Doctor,
I have been married for eight months. We want a child but my wife has not been able to conceive and she is now worried. But for the last two weeks, she has been experiencing pain in her abdomen, legs and body. She had menstruation 10 days before the pain started. Are these early signs of pregnancy?
Kenny

Dear Kenny,
It is true that during pregnancy a woman may get many vague symptoms. She may complain of various aches and pains. This is due to the body adjusting to the pregnancy state.
Because these symptoms are not very specific, one cannot conclude that a person is pregnant. But you can know this from a simple urine test, which your wife should do.
She should also see a doctor to make sure that those symptoms are not a sign of something else.
Signs of a very early pregnancy include increased urination, no menstruation, feeling like vomiting (morning sickness) and others.

What is happening to my leg?
Dear Doctor,
I have pain in my leg although there is no swelling. It started with itching in the big toe and spread to the whole leg. X-ray and blood tests were done in hospital and I was told it was a nerve pain. I was given some tablets but I am still in pain. I now get difficulty in walking. What can I do?
Bazil

Dear Bazil,
The nerves of the legs start in our lower back. They start in the spinal cord and go through holes in the backbone, down the back of the thigh to the feet. Sometimes, these nerves are pinched or compressed as they leave the backbone. The holes in the backbone that they use may start narrowing, pressing on the nerve, causing pain.
You need to be under the care of a doctor specialising in bones and nerves. He may suggest exercises (physiotherapy) and some drugs, including pain-killers. He may also recommend an operation to reduce the pressure on the nerve.

My genitals itch terribly
Dear Doctor,
I am 26 and a virgin. My private parts itch terribly. When I scratch, the area becomes pale, like it is burnt. Sweating increases the itching and it is embarrassing me. I also have eczema in other parts. What can I do?

Worried H
Dear H,
Eczema is a chronic itchy skin rash. The rash comes and goes and may respond to changes in weather. It may also be made worse by allergic reactions to things you touch, including clothes.
Find out whether that itching occurs when you are putting on a particular panty. Cotton panties are the best, but the elastic may contain rubber, which may cause allergy and itch. Materials in pad, tampons and other things may also cause you to itch. If you can identify what is causing the itching and stop using it, it will solve the problem.
A fungal infection in the groin may also cause itching.
See a doctor who will examine you and give you advice on how to control the itch.
