KAMPALA businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba has petitioned the High Court seeking to evict 60 vendors from Nakasero Market.

His company, Sheila Investments, wants the court to pass the judgment without the vendors defending themselves.

However, the Lands Division Registrar, Wilson Masalu-Musene, yesterday summoned each of the vendors, saying they were required to defend themselves.

He warned that if they failed to file their defence within 10 days, the court would allow Basajjabalaba to evict them.

Basajjabalaba claims that he is the landlord of the market because Kampala City Council leased the plots to him.

He adds that on June 26, the vendors signed an agreement with his company in which they acknowledged that their tenancy had expired.

He says the vendors have refused to vacate the market and he is losing money because of their continued stay.
