UGANDA telecom (utl) landline subscribers have increased by 20% in five months, the trade development manager, Robert Ssemakula, has said.

“uganda telecom connected nearly 20,000 new landline users in the last few months to reach an all-time-high of over 115,000 landlines from below 96,000 at the end of last year,” Ssemakula said at the awards ceremony for payphone operators at the Grand Imperial Hotel in Kampala.

“Industry critics have always predicted a drop in usage of landlines with the advent and unprecedented growth of mobile phone usage in sub-Saharan Africa. But with deep consumer insight, utl has effectively combined traditional copper line technology with fixed wireless, Code Division Multiple Access technology to bring more payphones to shops, streets and villages all over Uganda,” he said.

Ssemakula said over 58% of the landlines are used as public payphones. He said utl had created employment for over 70,000 Ugandans.

Uganda has the lowest telephone penetration level in East Africa.
