I am a Mufumbira, not a Musongora

SIR — In your “Society” section of the Sunday Vision of July 1, you reported that Justice Patrick Tabaro is a prominent Musongora. The statement is inaccurate. I am a Mufumbira born on June 19, 1947 at Matinza in Bufumbira county, which was then one of the counties of Kigezi district.

Kigezi was occupied by the British in 1909 under Captain Reid during the scramble for Africa, as Germans advanced from the south in today’s Rwanda and Belgians from the West in today’s Congo (DRC). In 1911 the three colonial powers demarcated their territories on the ground.

The people of Bufumbira fell within British territory while other Banyarwanda fell within German territory and other similar communities came under Belgian rule. When Germany was defeated in the First Word War, Rwanda was handed to Belgium, as a trust territory.

From Kisoro (Bufumbira) to Rwanda, Burundi and Buhaya in Tanzania, and many parts of the DRC the people speak mutually intelligible languages but none can be properly described as Basongora. To my knowledge, the Basongora fall within Runyoro-Rutoro, Runyambo, Ruhaya, Rukiga-Runyakore complex.
