THE Sheraton Kampala Hotel is to save sh18m per month after installing energy saving equipment by the end of the year. “We carried out an energy audit and found that the machinery and other equipment that was being used in the hotel was not saving energy,†the maintenance manager, Joseph Walakira, explained.
“As we install the equipment, the tariffs have reduced to sh142m. After installation, the company would be saving sh18m per month.†“For example, before we carried out the audit, the company had 42 fluorescent tubes in the laundry, which were using the same switch. Lights could not be reduced since they had to be on at the same time.â€
He said they would use fluorescent tubes of 20MW instead of 50MW and had replaced magnetic transformers with electronic ones.switch off extractors at night. An official in the energy ministry, Michael Kizza, said the ministry had developed the energy saving guide for the hotels aimed at helping them to save energy and reduce energy costs.
