SUPERSPORT cameras will capture Uganda’s historic quest for a Nations Cup invite when the Cranes duel Niger in a Ghana 2008 qualifier next month.

In an interview at the MultiChoice headquarters, celebrated Supersport anchor, Thomas Mlambo revealed to The New Vision that the pay-channel will beam the match live across the continent.

“It’s a big game. All the fans have to do is ensure that their subscriptions are paid up and they will watch history unfold. We, at Supersport, believe that that match has both significance and the potential to be as cracking as the earlier one against Nigeria.”

Mlambo, whose informative commentaries and trademark smile have turned him into an eminent authority on African football, tipped Uganda to plunder the air-ticket to Ghana come September 8. The Soccer Africa presenter though hastened to add that attitude remains the sole barrier between the Cranes and a historic berth at the 2008 continental finals.

“Uganda is well-placed. Uganda is no longer anyone’s second cousins. They’re a force too. But it will all depend on which Cranes team turns up that day. Will it be a Cranes team that’s raring to win or one that’s scared to lose? The coach will have to work on that. Football is unpredictable when there’s a lot at stake.”

Mlambo remarked how impressed he has been by the progress of Ugandan professionals in South Africa. “Uganda is a football factory. It has produced no flop.

From David [Obua], Dennis [Onyango], Posnet [Omwony] and Timothy [Batabaire]; there’s been no flop. David was a revelation in his debut. Meanwhile, last season, Onyango and Batabaire won the player-of-the-year awards. In fact, clubs asked me to scout more players.”

An Orlando Pirates fan, Mlambo (pictured) however disclosed that all hasn’t been a roller-coaster ride of pleasure for him and the pros.

“Obua scored that spectacular winner for Kaizer Chiefs against Pirates while recently, Posnet saved a penalty to help Celtic beat Pirates in the Telkom Charity Cup final. Clearly, Ugandans have caused me quite a lot of grief.”

Mlambo, who departs tonight for Johannesburg, nevertheless gave back to Ugandan football by presenting two separate cheques worth $1000 each to Friends of Football and Pro Line academies on behalf of MultiChoice last Tuesday.
