A NEW health centre in Iganga district has been abandoned for lack of a latrine. The district secretary for social affairs, Ngobi Nabikamba, said Nawandala Health Centre was constructed three years ago but now lies in bush land.

“What is lacking is only a latrine to make the health centre operational but the responsible district technocrats have failed us by not putting one in place,” he said. Nabikamba added that such a health facility catering for hundreds of patients cannot operate without a pit latrine.

He was speaking last week during a citizen’s forum organised by Uganda Joint Christian Council at the district council chambers in Iganga town.

The Rev. Grace Kaiso, the executive secretary, said the forum was timely to enable the people know what their political leaders should be doing for them.

Kaiso said through such interaction between the people and their leaders, the citizens know what to expect from their leaders and therefore hold them to account. “Government leaders and institutions should be made accountable to the populace with a focus on good governance, human rights, economic justice and democracy monitoring,” he said.

Kaiso promised that his oprgnanisation would make recommendations for action to respective authorities after holding the forums.

Meanwhile, Kamuli district chairman Steven Mubiru has advised residents invited to social gatherings to first check whether the host has a latrine.

Mubiru said several rural homes lack latrines and this inconveniences guests at events like weddings.

He was presiding over the handover of materials worth sh14 million for the adult literacy programme at the district headquarters in Kamuli town last week.

The material that was donated by Self-Help Development International, an Irish agency, included 48 bicycles, 72 blackboards and 200 primer adult literacy guide teaching books.
