ABOUT 200 bags of processed coffee were looted by residents from a truck that overturned after colliding with a stationary vehicle at Kitigoma in Mukono district on the Jinja-Kampala highway on Tuesday night.

Only 27 bags have been recovered, Jinja district Police commander Fred Ayebale said. The coffee belonged to a Kampala businessman.

Ayebale said five people have since been apprehended by the Police after they were found with bags of coffee in their houses.

“The suspects will be prosecuted as soon as investigations are completed,” Ayebale said.

The looting spree came after a Fuso truck no. UAG 590C, carrying coffee, collided with a Pajero, no. UAE 623C.
The Pajero was heading to Jinja while the Fuso truck was going towards Kampala.

Witnesses said prior to the incident, the Fuso driver sought to overtake another vehicle as he descended a cliff, only to ram into the Pajero from the opposite direction.
