Hundreds of people braved the Saturday mid-day heat to attend a ceremony during which Kabaka Ronald Mutebi handed over the instrument of power (Ddamula) to the new Katikkiro, Dan Muliika.
People gathered at the Lubiri palace main entrance from 8:00am to see Joseph ssemwogerere’s successor.
Present were Prime Minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, parliamentary, mayoral and local council candidates from Kampala, Mengo ministers, Kaaya Kavuma, the former deputy Katikkiro, the clergy and members of the royal family.
The Kabaka, who arrived at the main gate at 12:28pm, only said, “Daniel Muliika nkukwasa Ddamula ono ogende onamulileko Obuganda obwebweru (I entrust you with the kingdom mace to help me rule my kingdom.”
Soon after, the Kabaka, who was accompanied by Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda, princesses Katrina ssangalyambogo, Dorothy Nassolo, Sarah Kagere and Prince David Wassajja, returned to the Twekobe, his official house in the Lubiri.
Princess Nassolo held the mace before Mutebi handed it over amid tight security from his security personnel and traditional guards.
Muliika arrived at the Lubiri in Gordon Wavamunno’s Limo 1.
Since the katikkiro’s official house (Butikkiro) now houses the Joint Clinical Research Centre, Muliika, who wore a bright-red gown with golden embroidery, was allowed to use one room at the palace as his office for the ceremony.
Muliika’s security was provided by his (nnamungoona) clansmen.
