INSPECTOR General of Police Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura has assured the business community of security in the run up to the February 23 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Kayihura said he met the Asian community on Tuesday to allay fears of possible riots in the city during the elections.

“I met the Asian community to re-assure them that there is no tsunami and Uganda is secure,” he told reporters at the Electoral Commission offices yesterday.

“The situation is relatively peaceful compared to past elections and other countries,” Kayihura said.
He said the lawlessness which set in following the arrest of FDC president Col. Kizza Besigye had been contained.

“There have also been threats of violence and terrorism. Those threatening to burn petrol stations in the city are being monitored,” he said.

He warned against the formation of youth brigades to man the polling centres, saying this was the work of Police constables.

Kayihura said 30,000 personnel comprising the Police, prisons, Special Police Constables, Local Defence Unit and administration Police would man the polling centres.

He said the lingering insurgency in the north and cattle rustling in Karamoja would require extra deployment to escort the polling materials.
