ABOUT 400 international election observers are to monitor the presidential and parliamentary polls on Thursday next week, reports Charles Ariko.

Some of the observers have already arrived in the country. They include those from the Commonwealth led by the former Botswana president Sir, Ketumile Masire.

Electoral commissioner Tom Buruku on Wednesday said about 30,000 local elections observers accredited by the Electoral Commission (EC) would boost the international observers.

Buruku said the commission had approved the Democracy Monitoring Group (DEMGROUP) to deploy 20,000 local observers, who it is believed will be able cover the 19,788 polling stations.

He said in addition to the DEMGROUP’s 20,000 observers, there was another group of 10,000 local observers from different organisations that the commission had accredited.

Buruku was on Wednesday speaking at the launch of a booklet of revised electoral laws that were compiled by the Uganda Law Reform Commission.

Buruku commended the Uganda Law Reform Commission for revising the electoral laws and compiling them into a single document.
