THE Government should set aside sh10b for the purchase of six ferries that will replace the substandard and obsolete ones operating on various lakes in the country, a statement issued by the infrastructure committee of the Presidential Investors Round Table has said.

“Compared with neighbours, Uganda has sub-standard and obsolete vessels that are usually overloaded, pausing risks of accidents. The Government needs to provide sh10b to procure six ferries,” the statement said.

The statement said in the short term, the Government should re-introduce ferry services at Nabuganyi-Mbulamuti and procure an additional ferry for Bukakata-Luuku crossing due to the increased traffic.

The six ferries are operating on Bukakata-Luuku, Nakiwogo-Kyanvubu, Masindi Port-Kungu, Laropi-Umi and Kiyindi-Kirongo.

The statement said the Government should rehabilitate and maintain Mbulamuti-Nakiwogo, Nakiwogo-Lutoboka and Lwampanga-Namasale, which would cost sh600m.

“There is need to conduct hydrographic surveys and mappings, install navigation aids and communication facilities across navigable water ways and review and harmonise existing inland water transport legislation at a cost of sh200m,” the statement said.

The statement said the Government should expedite implementation of the safety navigation project, which involves procurement of navigation aids, search, rescue and radio communications components.
