UGANDA is to hold celebrations to mark 100 years of the climbing of Mount Rwenzori by an Italian expedition, climaxing with the scaling of the mountain by an expedition of Ugandan and Italian hikers, writes Steven Candia.

The Italian royal family is expected to take part in the Rwenzori Abruzzi centenary celebrations in June to emulate Luigi Amedeo of Savoy, Duke of Abruzzi, who led a scientific expedition in scaling the mountain in 1906. The event is organised by the Ugandan and Italian governments.

“The purpose is to foster the cooperation and to encourage the respective citizens to visit the Rwenzori ranges more and enjoy the unique resource that their ancestors helped inform the world,” Pietro Averono, the Italian Embassy Cultural/consular officer, said at a meeting for stakeholders in the tourism industry at the residence of the Italian Ambassador in Kololo.

Present were UTB’s senior information officer Tony Ofumbi, Sylvia Kalembe and Italian charge d’affairs Pietro Tombaccini.
The chairman of the Uganda tourism Board, Roni madhvani, called for involvement of the private sector in the preparations of the celebrations.
