Besigye recognises that Museveni won the elections

SIR — On Monday, it was published in The new vision that Dr. Kizza Besigye had warned President Yoweri Museveni not to sideline the 41% of the population who did not vote for him in the just-concluded presidential elections.

This is a positive sign. It shows that Besigye recognises that President Museveni won the elections and that he is going to be in charge of state affairs for the next five years. Otherwise, why appeal to him (Museveni) on this matter if he is not going to be in charge? Besigye is also quoted in the Monitor of March 13 as having said that he “agreed with the position of his presidential envoy, Beti Kamya ….. that FDC would present a competent and well-deserving person as leader of the opposition at the right time”.

Therefore, what Besigye should do, for the good of all Ugandans, is to start laying strategies of how that 41% can be organised into a strong and useful opposition, rather than wasting time on a petition he himself obviously knows will not change anything. That would be a more rational way forward. Walter Joseph Ocan Lira Municipality
